Republican Gov. Charlie Baker again signaled this week he will not endorse more candidates running for statewide office beyond Anthony Amore, the GOP nominee for state auditor.

Baker, who in December called for a return to civil politics as he ruled out a third term in office, has refrained from becoming involved in the race to replace him, including in the primary and now general election cycles.

GOP gubernatorial nominee Geoff Diehl, a former state representative endorsed for the post by former President Donald Trump, is running against Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey. Baker chalked up his lack of involvement in the race Wednesday to a “limited amount of time that’s involved here.”

“I really do think Anthony will be a terrific auditor if we can get him elected,” Baker told reporters Wednesday in Brockton. “I’m going to spend a lot of time, and I have spent a lot of time, supporting and working with Anthony. I also have been spending a lot of time, both going to events and visiting communities, with candidates who are running for the House and Senate.”

He and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito will focus on “a lot” of those House and Senate races between now and the election, Baker said without listing specific contests.

Amore, security director at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, faces state Sen. Diana DiZoglio, a Methuen Democrat, in the general election bid for state auditor. Amore last week secured an endorsement from former Gov. Jane Swift, who called him the “most qualified and the most independent voice and independent person running to be our next auditor.”

Baker on Wednesday emphasized the need for more conservative voices on Beacon Hill, as Democrats are poised to sweep the Executive Branch and Legislature.

“I really do believe that constructive friction and more than one team on the field is a good thing,” Baker said, as he issued broad support for the “right kind of Republicans” seeking state senator and representative roles.
